What is collected
- Hosting: your IP address and the page you asked for appear in the host's request log, which is how any web server delivers a page.
- On your device: the site saves your theme choice and, only if you choose an article topic, that topic. These preferences are not sent to us.
- Website statistics: on softwaremadeclear.com, Cloudflare Web Analytics measures page views, visits and page performance. A script supplied by Cloudflare runs in your browser. The measurements and their limits are described below.
- Optional statistics: after you allow them, Umami receives the public page address without its query or fragment, this site's hostname and, when available, the referring website's origin. Network requests also supply your IP address and browser information, used to create a monthly identifier.
Legal basis
- Hosting: legitimate interest in delivering the site and protecting it from abuse (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).
- Optional statistics: your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR and section 25(1) TDDDG), given by choosing Allow statistics and withdrawable through Statistics preferences.
- Website statistics: where personal data is processed, we rely on our legitimate interest in understanding the site's audience, improving its explanations and finding performance problems (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). The European Commission explains this legal basis. Your right to object is explained below.
Retention
Your light or dark theme choice is saved in your browser. If you choose an article topic, that topic is also remembered there for future reading suggestions. Neither preference is sent to the server. You can forget the topic in the article library or clear this site’s browser data. Your statistics choice is saved in this browser until you change it or clear this site's browser data. It contains your choice, not a visitor identifier. The statistics processor and its configured deletion interval are stated below. Hosting request logs are separate from optional statistics and follow the hosting provider's retention policy.

Optional website statistics
We use Umami to understand which public explanations are read and to measure the site's audience. The script loads only after you allow statistics, and Do Not Track is respected. Utility and private pages are excluded. Each pageview includes the public page address, hostname and, when available, the referring website's origin. Optional usage events record a fixed action and tool name after a valid example calculation, a successful copy, a prepared template download, or at least 20 seconds of visible article time with interaction and half the article in view. Separate diagnostic events record the first calculator edit, fixed calculation, copy and download error categories, clicks to known tools or learning paths, and guide searches with no results. Additional optional events record fixed visible-time milestones (30, 60 and 180 seconds after interaction), content-viewport milestones (25, 50, 75 and 90 percent), copy/download attempts, calculator resets, search submissions and result clicks, language changes and outbound clicks without their destinations. Inputs, copied text, search text, error messages and URL search parameters are not sent. Visible time after one interaction does not prove continuous attention, and viewport depth does not prove reading. The expanded statistics require a fresh opt-in; an older saved permission is not reused.
Umami uses request information to link visits with a hashed identifier that changes each month, without setting an analytics cookie. This estimates visitors: network or browser changes can count one person more than once, while people sharing a network and browser can be counted together. Hosting request logs remain separate.
You can keep statistics off and read the same pages. Use Statistics preferences to withdraw permission or change your choice. A saved refusal keeps statistics off on later pages in this browser. If the choice cannot be saved or cleared, the notice tells you and new requests stop on the current page; a prior saved choice may still apply later. You can also clear this site's browser data. Withdrawal does not automatically delete statistics already received. Contact the controller below about data rights.

Cloudflare Web Analytics
We use Cloudflare Web Analytics globally on softwaremadeclear.com to understand which pages are read and how well they load and respond. It reports aggregate usage and performance. We do not use these measurements for advertising or to build a personal reading profile.
Measurements include a page-load identifier, visited and referring page addresses, country, browser, operating system, device type, and page timing, responsiveness and layout stability. Cloudflare states that Web Analytics does not log query strings. Cloudflare's measurement dimensions.
According to Cloudflare, its analytics script does not use cookies or browser storage, and does not fingerprint visitors or track individuals across websites. Requests still send your IP address to Cloudflare. Its RUM service discards the address at the receiving data centre and does not store it in its core databases or logs. Visits and page views do not tell us how many distinct people read the site in a month. Disabled JavaScript, browser blockers and failed requests can prevent measurements from arriving.
- Statistics retention
- Cloudflare retains unsampled beacons for seven days, then aggregates or samples older data; low-traffic sites may retain a greater sample. Analytics for the previous six months is available in its dashboard. This access window is not a promise that all data is deleted after six months. Cloudflare's sampling and history limits.
- Processing and transfers
- Cloudflare may process data outside your country, including in the United States. Cloudflare describes its international transfer safeguards, including the EU–US Data Privacy Framework and standard contractual clauses, in its privacy policy, Data Processing Addendum and list of subprocessors.
Your rights
Under the GDPR, and subject to the conditions of each right, you can request access, correction, deletion, restriction or portability of your personal data, object to its use, and lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority. Where processing relies on consent, you can withdraw that consent at any time.
